best way to climb a pine tree

I took a course in basic tree climbing in 95 and was told dont tie in with your climbing line any thing smaller then 6 inches which is a good start if you are a beginer.In the real world in my opinion depends on the tree you are climbing.Get to know your trees.Example tulip and willow i would not tie in less then 6inches.Oak is stronger so in my opinion 4inches.Also on your way up in the tree look at branch attachments for splits or cracks or decay.Hope that helps some.
