I have bought but have not received the Husqvarna 372xp. After viewing other members similar saws with various brands of bar and chain combos. Is the stock bar and chain# (H47X-84) that comes with this saw not the greatest and should be upgraded? Is it a weight issue? If I upgrade now I can still sell the stock bar as new to recoup some funds or keep it as a spare. What type of chain should I be using to buck hardwood rounds, semi-chisel, chisel, or square chisel as this is the main purpose for owning this saw. Thanks, Mike

The bar and chain that comes with it is fine. Chain depends on what kind of wood you cut, if you cut clean and green wood or dead and dirty wood. Clean and green=chisel and dead and dirty=semi chisel. I use semi chisel and its the best all around chain for all conditions.

Thanks Chris, I like to keep 3 sharp chains available for each saw I take with me when I cut, the two I ordered with the saw are both chisel. I try to stay away from the dry and dirty, but I'll add a semi-chisel 24" to my Christmas list. I don't sharpen in the field or sharpen my own chains at all for that matter. I have passed up a bunch of scores over the years where land was cleared with a dozer and the logs and dirt pushed around together. I just won't abuse my equipment.
Any specific brand of chain known to hold an edge longer?

I have several 372's and run the 24" bar with the replaceable tip and 84 DL chain on all of them.

H47X is 72LGX (.050), which is a very good chain, despite I would have preferred H42/73LPX (.058).

The "Husky" bar likely is a rebranded Oregon Power-Match - a decent RSN bar, but not among the very best ones.

I run a total super 20" bar and stihl chain on mine,,,, for me I really don't need to go any bigger but I do have longer bars if I do need them

I've found Husky chains to be easy to sharpen and cut well. I'd suggest semi-chisel chain on a 20" bar if you have the option to exchange bars, though. Reasons: 1. Better front/back balance; 2. Fewer links to sharpen; 3. Semi-chisel seems to stay sharp longer than chisel and is generally less fussy; 4. While a 24" bar is fine buried in softwood, a 20" bar seems a better match for the power of the saw. I have a 25" bar for my MS440 that works with the big White Pine we have locally, but it's too much of a PITA to use otherwise.

Otherwise, just run what you've got, plus a loop of semi-chisel. You might have to use a lighter touch burying the bar in oak, but the 372xp represents one of the best saw designs ever.

Can the .058 chain be used on the same bar as the .050 chain? Maybe buy a 20" bar and a couple of spare chains for it, so I have the option to go smaller/more power. I only need the 24" for the LARGE rounds anyway.

I'd keep the 24 inch bar and get a 20 inch bar and chain as well. I'd guess my saw wears the 20 inch bar more than 24 or 32. If you find yourself cutting shagbark hickory or osage orange, I like the semi-chisel, for oak I mostly use full chisel. Seeing that your from Lenexa, I hope you headed west to Perry LeCompton /Bishops for your 372. If not, recommend taking a trip, absolutely the best saw shop in the area.

Yeah I talk to Joel yesterday morning, but found an unbeatable deal on the 372xp before I could go meet him in person. He's definitely enthusiastic about the Husqvarna line of saws.
I'm convinced now, I am going to keep the stock 24" bar and chains then buy a 20" bar with a couple of Stihl chains.

Now let's talk about 20" bars and chains. What is the best quality bar/chain combo that will fit on this saw

All shops ive ever been in sell 372 xt with a 32 inch bar and chain. This is in pnw when I bought mine I told them its too much bar for this saw. Mine has 24 .50 guage on it.

That would be a monster long saw, but is the PNW. Big trees=Big saws

I use the 73LPX chain (3/8" 1.5mm Oregon),
Have three 16" and one 20" bars for my 372's

If I buy the 208RNDD009 bar and wanted to buy Stihl chains, would any 3/8" .050 gauge 72 drive link chain work? Would .o58 chains work on this bar too?

That bar requires .058 chain. The first 2 numbers are length (20") and the third number is representative of the 3rd number in chain gauge...0=.050, 8=.058, 3=.063.

Andyshine has a thread going about chain gauge...you may want to read it.

Finally, if you feel like doing a little modification to make it fit your saw, this is an absolute beast of a bar. You'll also need to install the Husky silver Binford 5000 clutch cover.
