Isabel really had her way with specimen red oak and hickory trees in Richmond. Heavy nuts and acorns, big broad top-heavy crowns after years of crown raising, caused them to keel over.

Poor root environment from leaf removal and inadequate mulch also a factor. ?Wind and rain of course too tho it was interesting to see that most trees that failed had root problems.

Next time you hear about a hurricane, if you want to chase it, consider the following, fwiw:

If winds are 60 mph or more in a metropolitan area, don't wait to get the go-ahead from a local connection. Just get your tools and papers in order and travel in its wake. You'll be busy.

Cold showers and sleeping bags are ok too. My sister's in west richmond and she won't have power for days and days while poles get reset and lines restrung.

You top-notch upper-crusters sure know how to take it easy.

Do you think Richmond is a good area for storm chasing with a stump grinder?? I wouldn't want to be considerred a Yankee carpet bagger.
I'm a neosouthern brownbagger. The area I'm working in has much need for stump work, especially if your machine can grind down upheaved rootballs. The backhoes dig them out quick and clean but most folks understand it will take $ to fill the hole, so best to grind and replant. If you can grind the big ones come down I can hook you up with some work.

hey

Didn't a tornado come through there right after Isabel to make sure the trees that made it got knocked down also?

Some tree loss victims speculated the same, but the damage looked more like it was caused by straight-line shear winds spun off the cyclone. Whatever you call them, they were powerful.

They supposedly did have some tornadoes down near there Monday night.

I think if you had a RG50 or better portable grinder you should be able to stay pretty busy just doing stumps the other guys don't have time or equipment for.
I've been pricing most of my jobs for the stump seperate to make sure I get paid for the immediate work first cause I know it might be a couple weeks before we get to the stumps. If they get somebody else to do them, so be it.

Itemizing and getting paid as you go, excellent business sense! I've lost income from losing track of jobs that had invoicing postponed because I had one more task to go, dumdumdum.

People in west Richmond burbs do NOT want their yards torn up by a backhoe dragging stumps out. Most are ready to pay for grinding and replanting, and few want grass more than real landscape. I'm bringing up shrubs and trees next month--Releaf Richmond!
