Wow, what a project!! Almost done, nearly operational. Started with a log
splitter made from medium truck parts and a boom lift. 10 gpm Vickers pump
and a safetyed out large bore hydraulic cyl. 5 gal fuel and hydraulic tanks
from the truck air tanks, front truck axle with 7x19.5 inch rubber. The engine
is a Wisconsin TJD, magneto fired 180 degree crank twin cyl mill, 18.5hp

Trouble likely started when the original builder didn't put any intake screen
or filter on his freshly welded air tank reservoir. The pump was badly eaten
and on removal, there was a lot of slag and scale inside the tank, very bad
indeed. Metal had worked its way through the system and had eaten up the
piston seals and valve seals as well as chewing up the pump.

I opted to replace the entire hydraulic system as 10gpm on that big of
a cyl was just too slow!

Overhauled piston, 5x48 or something zany.
New 25 gallon tank, welded aluminum.
New Haldex 28 gpm pump
New twin spool valve (log lifter later)
New breaker points & condenser
New lines fabricated locally
Removed lowering valves from the ram, bored out
1/4 inch hydraulic ports to 9/16, welded on 3/4 pipe
90 degree elbows to base of ram.
Added 30 gpm Intake screen and discharge filter.
Replaced small loud coffeecan muffler with small IH
tractor muffler, huge drop in noise.

Still left to do:
Carb overhaul
Rebuild pusher shoe to better follow beam.
Add 12v work light and maybe tail lights for towing.

Mistakes:
Bulkhead fitting on bottom of tank has slow drip, will try to
tighten further or use better thread sealer. I think the fitting
distorted during welding, checked seams for leaks but didn't
check plugs.
Intake could use a small diffuser over it to prevent cavitation,
though it may have just been air in the intake screen, diffuser
a good idea anyway.

First video production, and still purging a lot of air

Worked for me. Cool project! I like the tank - that aluminium (Brit spelling ;)) will throw the heat off nicely.

Good choice of colors, too!

Very nice! But I noticed that the ram deflected upwards a bit as you were splitting the large round (see time around :40 sec).

I know it may be a little picky but would it save some wear on the ram/pivot if you were to put a second ram retention system closer to the business end of the ram?

I know I'm not describing it well but essentially, bolt on a second set of flat stock to hold the working side of the ram down to the flange on the I-beam.

Beautiful paint job. Did I see a pintle hook to tow that thing? :)

The running gear would suggest that you can haul this down the highway but would you want to?

I don't have a lot of confidence doing that with my store-bought system.

link broke?

Could be intermittent, home web server and well been having some issues! Workin at the moment. Was sort of a safety yellow but opted for the JD scheme, will toss a set of decals on it for confusion.

Exactly right all around! lotsa folks here have the pusher fully wrapped around the beam, I want to do that as well, The rear pusher is but the
extension isn't rather a minor change that should help keep things down.
Yeppers, pintle ring for towing. I'd tow it down the highway, big slow
rolling tires would be fine, even the bearings and seals and all are in
great shape. Even has left handed lug nuts :)

it worked.

nice project!!

Nice job on the rebuild.

Thanks! I've been trying to find a new steel supplier locally,
two have gone under, they were job shops I was friendly with
and used as my steel supply :) I think I've found one about
20 miles down the road. I'll rebuild the pusher extension be a
lot more snug to the beam.
