Greetings to all,
Haven't posted in a while, got a question.
I am going to aquire some fairly large wood, ( 4'+) and am simply not used to cutting stuff that big. I don't have a saw larger than 61cc ( S-D 119) or a bar longer than 20". I am not falling these trees, just cutting them up for firewood. I am thinking I would like to have a larger saw/bar to cut these up, but am on a fairly tight budget. Any recommendations on an inexpensive older saw? I am not brand loyal at this point. I would just put a 28" bar on the 119, but I'm not sure I would be happy with the time it would take me to make a cut.
Thanks.

Hi django, there is a woodtick out your way called Woodsjunkie, he is a member here and although I cant volunteer his help, he may show you the ropes and maybe even lend you a saw you can rock out for awhile. Seeing he is in the doghouse and all, it would be a good way for him to gain favour again from the moderators for posting inapropriate pictures, which I have never done.
John

Rocky, I appreciate what your saying. However, I don't live in Florida.:D Yes big wood is more work. However I am in the process of building a tractor mounted splitter for my Ford 4000 that should make very quick work of it. Also, The outdoor woodstove I built lat year can swallow a pretty large log, limited mostly by how big a piece I can lift. So, I am not splitting the log into a bunch of little pieces. I wanna cut it. Bad.
Thanks for your reply, G.L., The Junky lives a couple of hours from me. I hadn't thought about him. I can't recall anything inappropriate ever being posted by anyone. But then again, I am almost impossible to offend.

Perhaps I should clarify. I have limited experience with the big boys,I have used a Stihl 066 w/ a 36" bar on occasion ( borrowed)
Nice saw. I could borrow it again, but I want to cut this wood in my "spare time" whatever that is. So I want the saw at hand.
I see Stihl 064, 056, etc... on ebay, but I don't know if I want to go that route. I don't know the "history" of the bigger saws, which ones had problems with what, etc.... as they are not used in my neck of the woods very much, the experience base is limited. Saws such as the ones Ben stated would undoubtably fit the bill, but what is a fair price to pay for such saws in "running" condition? I just saw a couple of 056's (powerhead only)sell on ebay for $120 and less. Good deal? If they were not toast?
I am leery of ebay saws, although I have gotten some good deals.

Hi. There are a few good people to deal with on ebay. I have bought and sold many a saw, and have never had a problem. Keep watching, and you should be able to get a good deal. When you find something that strikes your interest, ask about it specifically on here, and maybe you can get some insight on the individual.

Hey Django, I have picked up a new MS 660 and just got a new 088 today as well, bars up to 36" I'm going to have a team working near Sandusky for half a week end of Jan I beleive. If you are nearby we can meet up.

Thanks Silverblue. Give me a shout when you are going to be in Sandusky. It's about 2 hrs. for me by Turnpike, so it's certainly a possibility. Too cold to go to Cedar Piont though. Too bad. Just curious, how do you get a job in Sandusky, living in Ontario?
Seems like a long way to travel.

Getting a general mix of oaks, some maple etc... They have been laying around long enough that the bark is gone on most of them. I stuck a saw in some of them, and some are rotten ( not going to get those) and some are very solid yet. Some are rotten for a couple of inches on the I.D. and then sound. A mixed bag.
Seems like there would be someone on the site here with a saw to peddle. I would trust someone on the site before someone on ebay. Although I see some of the guy's here selling there. I cannot believe what an 044 brings on ebay. Must be the saw of choice for a lot of guys.

django- a lot of saws, especially bigger ones, hold their resale value well. I might be able to help you with a good deal on a bigger saw. There's a couple of other gents who might be as well. I sent you a PM. thanks.

silverblue, where in sandusky are you working i live about 15 miles south of sandusky

Ok you guys better stop in for a cold one if your going to be that close to me.
Ohio hunter we must be neighbors stop by and will shoot the BS and check out some saws

Why Woodsjunky, you're no Daisy, you're no Daisy at all.
Seriously, if I can get away, it would be cool to meet y'all.
Now, being as this thread is supposed to be about my need ( real or imagined) for a big saw, perhaps someone could tell me why Stihl model numbers are not descriptive? An 056 isn't 5.6 c.u. an 044 isn't 4.4 cu. etc...
Of course, I have no idea what the heck Dolmars old model #'s mean. What does 119 stand for? or 166? HUsky seems to be pretty strait forward.

Django:
.
I have seen several 056’s of late on ebay. I must say that the 056 is like the proverbial high school sweetheart to me. I purchased one new, years ago. It ran like a scalded dog!! An 056 was a generation higher rpm from anything I’d used before. Trouble is, I listened to the rumors of pulpers around here burning them up because they revved too high. I traded it for an 051, an older and slower saw, but quite powerful. I loved my 051. I had to watch where I started it … sometimes trees would simply fall over upon hearing it. But I never forgot my 056. I now have an 066 and I think the 056 was quite similar. For older saws bucking, the 051 or 075 running .404 are fantastic. But the 056 is also the cat’s butt for bucking firewood (lighter and faster). All models are tried and true with parts available ‘round here.

django,

I just put a 046 24" on ebay. I can outfit it with a 28" bar if needed. Just like all saws I cannot warranty it but if the buyer tries it and does not like it they are just out the shipping. I may sell my other 046 later which has had less use but of course the price would be higher. They do hold their value. Why are you building a tractor mounted splitter ? What happen to the flywheel machine ?

The great drawback of my flywheel splitter is the fact that it is horizontal only. It works great on wood you can lift. Also, once I get a project done, I tend to lose interest, and want to try something else.

honesty is refreshen huh.. im the same way..which eve4r body knew anyway ,,the way i whip around from one saw to another...kinda gives my wife a little hope now an agin,,but i aint left her yet..
