That is some incredible burl there, Seth
What'cha gonna make with it?

Nice looking Burl Seth, first time I have seen black ash burl. I should save the ones I find, but they usually end up in a firebox somewhere. I once saw a burl the size of a volkswagon on the Alaska Hwy., around Watson Lake Yukon.

Well if it does'nt crack drying, maybe a small intable/lamp or something. It's very dense and might be a ????? to work with.Any suggestions? Seth

Hi Seth, put it in the microwave if it will fit, trust me, it works great, no cracking if you go medium for 20 minutes or so, Or pack it in sawdust in a cool place.

Hello John
I haven't seen alot of burls in my 7 years wood hicken it.And usally in Cherry and Hard Maple. The logs with burls are supposed to go with the Walnut cratch wood and spaltted Maple. You know the funky stuff. But this one slipted trough . I think the debarker operator was chafen balls when he seen this log on the deck .

If you air-dry it, coat it in some kind of sealer. wax is usually used for burls. The key is to slow down the drying rate so some parts don't dry quicker than others. That's what makes it crack and twist.
As for working it, one word on tools: Sharpasafreakinrazor. Not so much for the density, but the grain. Every cut in a burl is against the grain, so a dull tool will take chunks out.
Would make a killer elect. guitar top! Of course scraps can be fashioned into various herbal incineration implements:alien:
