So my buddy calls me up to tell me he has this tree getting taken down next to his house and his neighbors and asks if I wanted the wood. He says its walnut, which it is, and I said sure and Ill stop by to cut it up. I get there and he has two guys with a pick up truck. One guy is up the tree which is significantly larger then I thought it was which is all the better for me. I am watching these two guys which obviously are not professionals, they have some skill but not all there. This large tree branch which they are cutting swings and brushes neighbors house( no damage) and I was like wtf. At this point I leave because I don't want to witness what could have happened and tell my buddy to call me when its down and ill buck up the tree. Well these guys drop the rest of the top limbs with two supposedly brushing or pinching the climbers leg when falling. I told my buddy afterwards to make sure they have insurance even if they are your parents friends. At least I got some wood out of it about 24" across . View attachment 297756View attachment 297757

Like they say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Like you say though you got some nice black walnut wood for the woodstove and no one got killed.
Win Win :)

Looks like some nice rounds collected.

Big rounds there, looks good. U'll get some wood out of that. What a bunch of idiots! Some people do not belong in a tree! lol

I know a little, but most importantly, I know that I don't know what I don't know!

I'm not a pro and won't' touch a tree that has the remotest chance of hitting or hanging on anything. I pass on some I'd like to have, but there's always another tree.

Great looking rounds there! Those look like they'd be a blast busting up!

Enjoy.

It finally happened! Some homeowner finally realized they would have to pay to get that valuable black walnut tree taken down!

My thoughts exactly. I had looked at the tree a while back and told him flat out I wouldn't touch it. Anywhere close to a house, building, etc. I will drop trees when they are alone in the open or in the woods. Too bad I don't mill though because the main trunk would've made some nice boards.

Only complaint about black walnut as firewood is the amount of ashes it leaves. Fills the firebox up twice as fast as the ash, maple or hickory that I was burning with it last year.

Best thing about walnut its easy to split. Most enjoyable to pop those apart with a maul and a six pack of busch light..........

You could try free handing a couple off one of the sides before you buck it up.

err...next time anyway ;)

I've hauled in five cords of walnut this year and divided it up with my good friend who is strong enough to split it with a maul. Three big trees were dropped in another friend's back yard in November. We have yet another cord to remove. The guys who felled it collected their dough and then left it piled all over the yard.

The "tree droppers" left behind some enormous pieces and most chunks were cut every which direction, just to get the job done and collect their "ransom" from the homeowner. That's the way it is sometimes.

Black walnut is nice to split, pretty wood, and smells great when it burns. Like a pipe. I haven't not gotten any in a long time.

Good old Blue yummy, reminded me of onions when I was in college, don't drink anymore, but if I were going to drink beer when I was busting wood it would be Dos Equis, stay thirsty my friends.

Nobody Ever Complains...

... whenever I supply a little walnut with my typical delivery of firewood that contains mostly other hardwoods. If even a little walnut is in the truck with everything else, I usually get a thumbs up. Not sure why, but I'll take it.

psssst... I usually always throw in split walnut in my own woodpile whenever I can get it. :msp_wink:
