Got a fella that I help cut a black walnut down. Its nice an straight with no nots for about 14 ft, and has a diameter of approx 24". Would it be worth trying to mill this down myself? Have never done it before, and don't have any "projects" for the wood yet either!!

That sounds like a nice log , maybe too nice to treat it as my first milling log.
I'd look at practicing on something else first.
What sort of a milling setup do you have (access to)?

Don't let that stop you. I have milled over 120 logs and have used about 1 slab and given away about 5.

I'm with Bob, might not be a good one to try for the first, but I would save the log and maybe make a practice run or two on another log if you have it. Wear a dust mask when you mill that walnut, the dust from that stuff can mess your throat up for quite awhile.

Why don't you post your location and ask for help. I don't see any milling saws in your sig, and it's an investment for a decent size milling saw and equipment. You'd probably want about an 80CC saw at least for 24" wood.

Not everyone likes to lean over a running chain saw just inches from the chain at WOT and breathe the 2-stroke fumes while being deafened by the saw.

Other of us are certified insane and accept it as therapy.

It'd be a shame to just put the log up a chimney. And as far as projects - if you cut it they will come.

Gemnii...you know I never noticed that I don't have my location in there correctly...sorry bout that...(getting old..yeah thats it). I am located in Connecticut. I have my father in laws Husky 181, that I was going to try and use, I have made the descion not too. I just hate to have this guy cut this wood up and feed it too the fire. What I'm thinking is trying to locate a local mill and first take a look, then if its not to costly, have him mill it down into som project wood. My father in law is 70 and he loves the wood. He had cherry done years back and made a grandfather clock out of it!. I'm just looking for some projects for the wood!!
Thanks
Rich

OK you got the saw, that's the big investment for a CSM, all you need is the B&C and a Mark III.

The primary problem with "local mills" is that they are (rightfully so) wary of trees brought in, due to metal etc., which eats blades. And you have to haul a ton or two of tree to them.

Look on Craigslist though, a couple of portable sawyers show up in Connecticut.

Hi, where are you located in Ct. I am in Madison Ct. and could bring my 3120 and granberg mill over and cut it up to whatever dimensions you want. Be glad to show you the ropes, shame to waste a nice tree like that, Bart

I just got 375 BF out of a walnut tree that a friend had cut up after being blown down. While I have a Granberg mill and a Frick 01, I brought it to our local tractor show and had the Woodmiser dealer demonstrate his saw on it for free!

I just got it stacked and striped yesterday. I agree with the others, far too good of a log to burn....
