not sure if this post is in thee right place . but here it goes , I have a set of fork lift forks for my bobcat and made a mount to attach them to the bobcat use it mainly for loading the saw mill and moving fire wood , but every once in a while I use it to move rocks that are a little to big. will I just bent the backing plate and mounts to hell . wondering what everyone is using for the mount and backing plate I was thinking 2x2x 1/4 but it is not cheep and might be overkill.

Sounds like you need a grapple bucket. Did you bend the plate on the forks or machine?

i have built 3 backing plates for skidsteer implements, all 3 being too lightweight.

1/4 inch is minimal, but for a normal skidsteer, will work.

running into things hard tears things hard.

what gets torn up is the hooks for the latches, and the tops of the implement that holds it when it curls back.

I run a part time business working on farm, logging, and construction equipment for the local community, mostly welding. If it can be bent, broken, or twisted, I've probably seen it. When it comes to earth moving and log handling equipment, there's no such thing as overkill. Over the last 12 years or so, I have had to adopt the motto of Too much is just enough. I think 1/4 inch will be marginal, 1/2 will work a lot better but then you start getting into weight issues, maybe compromise with 3/8.
