I can't believe I actually bought a "little" new saw. The handle on my Echo 305 cracked, and it's got quite a few years on it, so I was thinking about an Echo 310 to replace it. I think they wanted $199 for it. Then I walked down to Southern States to check out the little Stihls. The MS170 was on sale for $159. So, what the heck, I bought it. Now I have 4 Stihls, MS170, 08S, MS 290, and MS 660. Over 20 Homelites and 3 Echo's. I probably could have had a Homelite 150 running, but it's not shiney new. The MS 170 is about as shiney as my 660. I don't climb anymore, but I still need a little doodle bug saw. Hope it can hold up to me, Joe.

Love my 170, especially with the 215 carb on it. I run a 12" bar on it pretty much all the time. Oak trees have a ton of limbs so it gets used a lot.

I'll keep that carb swap in mind. A couple times a year I'll put my climbing belt on and tie in to a tree while working off a ladder, so I need something small I can one hand. I don't like top handles. I did have an old Homelite that had 2 triggers, one up front like a top handle and one way in the back. I wonder if that was the 150, I'll have to go check. I have a pile of small logs we piled up at my friends rental house that need to be cut up. I'll probably wait till Monday to try out the 170 on them. It's supposed to get hot for the next couple days, Joe.

I've got a 170 also. Stock. One thing I'm not crazy about is the spindly chain it came with. I think it might be due for a new one sometime later this year - what's your exact B&C setup? Did you swap drive sprockets? Or just keep the same type chain?

I bought one just recently as well. I set out to buy two stihl mid size projects and figured I'm going to burn the same fuel in the truck, throw it in for the right price. So now I've got a 170 project as well. I don't expect it to replace my 660.

I looked at top handles too but like you I can one hand the 170 easily and it just makes sense. I've got two homelites like that out in the garage, I'm sure they just need carb kits but haven't gotten the ambition to dig into them.

Here somewhere I posted about how happy I was with some Archer chain, the teeth are larger on it but for some reason it seemed to cut faster than the Stihl chain. 12" bar and still the spur sprocket, I really enjoy cutting with that little saw.
