Cleaning and inspecting my new-to-me 044 and found a lot of material inside and outside of clutch drum, some might be chain oil and rest clutch friction material(?) Drum was easy to clean and I wanted to spray the clutch shoes/springs with brake cleaner to clean them as well, but was hesitant, thought I would first ask here. Any issues with cleaning clutch mechanism and shoes with brake cleaner?

I could not tell that it was slipping when I ran it, but I suppose a new one is in its future at some point. Is it easy to tell if slipping? Test (briefly) by activating chain brake, WOT, RPM's increase barely above idle?

I use Oil Eater which is a water soluable cleaner that is safe for plastic and metal. Rinse well and then run the saw to operating temp. If your clutch is really nasty then pull it off and clean it well, then pull the plastic segment and inspect the oil pump. You may need a new oil pump worm anyway.

I sell a lot of clutches to folks that don't need them........

If you spray brake cleaner, it wont hurt, unless you foul/soak the sprocket bearing, and that wouldn't be too bad... New bearing, etc....
