Broke my chainbrake handle (and see, typing this, that I'm not the only one)

Anyone got a chainbrake handle for an 084? I broke mine when a log rolled on it after having gotten stuck and cutting my way out with the other saw. Of course, you can't get that part from Stihl any more. Anyone got one for sale/trade? I've got a full-wrap 075 handle and no 075 to put it on...

Also, one of the screw holes on the bottom that holds the handle on is stripped out (it's plastic?!). What's the fix for that? What I am thinking is epoxying in a piece of similar plastic (or just filling the hole with epoxy) and then drilling it and putting the screw back in. Thoughts? There's a screw in it now but the hole is stripped. It will just fall out if I leave it in there.

Lastly, my chain cover is cracked. Is it possible (and not beyond my skill as a welder, which is quite limited in spite of my profile pic) to weld that? Or do I just get a new cover? Anyone got one?

Funny part is that the chain brake doesn't work anyway... ;)

However, when I am using it /not/ for milling (bought myself some chaps today for not milling, btw) I kinda like to have it on there. Plus if I ever WANT to fix the chain brake....

Thanks for the link. I'll check.

I found the chain brake was nothing but a pain on a milling saw. Inevitably every time I was moving the mill around I'd bump the brake and not know it. The chain brake on the 076 is pretty hard to come by so I started using a plain cover without the chain brake. I still have the brake on my 880, but I use it occasionally to buck up large rounds. Post over in the swap meet. Somebody over there is bound to have one.

Chaps are a nice thing to have. I had a buddy slice the top of his thigh a few months back. He's wearing chaps now.

I e got another tank here but it's got 2 stripped holes. Fill that one with with epoxy or the like. I don't like chain brake handles on milling saws either. Clutch cover is the same as the 088. You could weld that but it's magnesium so be careful.

Might be time to fab a new cover(check out BobL's cover). Looks like it was made to toss those chips away from the saw better....

I remember having saw chaps before I had saws....get use to just wearing them all the time while out, it'll be like second-nature after awhile. After all, the best chaps in the truck never worked!

My clutch cover bolts to the mill frame and a bolt under the clutch cover, but it could just as easily be made to mount to the bar bolts.
Internally it is lined with 1/8" thick HDPE.
The L shaped stand off that bolts to the regular clutch cover mounting hole was needed after I incorrectly located the ally tab on the top of the cover .
The plan was to have the tab directly above the mounting hole and just use a piece of ally tubing as a spacer between the tab and the hole and have a long bolt pass through the tab and tube.
Anyway it works and cleans the saw dust really well

The 076 has the same temporary cover I made 7 years ago.
This is made of poly carbonate pop riveted onto a galv plate outer.
The cover has a large access hole in it so the back bar bolt can be accessed without removing the cover.
It's only held on by those two gold passivated bolts which means it comes loose occasionally but it has never come off during use.
