I was milling a 24" Red Oak a few days ago and the first cut went fine. Then I moved the slab off and needed to take a couple of boards off before I could make the bottom cut. I need 1 1/4 for a trailer bed so I set it there and began to cut. on finishing the cut I noticed it was thick. maybe 2-2.5 inches. Checked the mill and sure enough it had slipped to 2.5. So I reset and started over, same results. This time I noticed the casting was broken at the U bolt. The log turned out to have a rotten spot in the center so I don't feel to bad about it.

Granberg is sending a replacement, no questions asked.

I only tighten with a short scrwrench and my thumb, May be I over tightened? Maybe it was the exhaust of the 395 right up against it as I was trying to get 29 inches out of a 20 inch bar. had to pry the slab off but it worked ok.

Did the heat expand the metal and break the casting?

I don't want to repeat this, maybe a heat shield is in order.

Those pieces are cast aluminum and there could have been air bubbles in that cast part. So when you tightened the U-bolt it cracked where a bubble was in the casting. Good to hear Ganberg is sending a new part. Good luck milling.
