My brother broke a muffler bolt on his 290, (the one that is blocked by the shroud). Is there a simple trick to remove this or does the shroud have to be disassembled?

I'm not quite sure what shroud your speaking of.

However, in order to replace the broken muffler bolt you need to do the following.

1) Remove the other two nuts on the other two muffler bolts
2) Pull off muffler and the metal flange behind it.
3) Slide out the broken muffler bolt out of the cylinder slot.

Reassembly
1) Make sure all three muffler bolts are slid into their slots in the cylinder.
2) Slide on metal flange that will also hold bolts from slipping out of their cylinder slots.
3) Reinstall muffler and the three washers and nuts

That's how I would do it.

No, you do not need to remove it. You need to angle the bolt towards the center of the exhaust port and wiggle it out.
If you need a bolt, pm me your address and I'll send ya one.

My bro tried the to wiggle and pry it out, with no luck. I'm gonna look at it tomorrow. The service manual refers to the shroud being removed, but I thought I would try the experts.

Snap some pics to give us an idea of what your talking about so we get a better understanding. You should be able to follow the steps I outlined to replace the broken muffler bolt.

Just remove the muffler; gasket and the metal shroud then remove the bolt easy

Thanks for the offer Arrowhead, but he purchased 3 replacement bolts already. He said that 2 of them slide in and out easily but the broken one is partially blocked by what the manual calls a shroud. It may be Stihl's way of over engineering a rather simple fix.

Yea, its one of the right side bolts. You may in fact have to a least loosen the shroud enough to wiggle it out of the cylinder slot.

Yep, that one is a stinker. The "correct" way to swap it is to remove the top cover and the shroud. You can pry the shroud rearward, and cock the bolt to work it out. If there is bit of time on the saw, I'd pull the cover and blow things out. Probably a good time to check/replace the fuel line while you are in there.

I was able to pry the broken bolt off and, with a bit more effort, install the new one. Love this site. Thanks for the assistance.
