I haven't been climbing much, except for a few people who are as much friend as employer. I love working out in L.A. There is always interesting stuff going on. Anyway at this unbelievable property in the hills I was checking out this large majestic live Oak. Some where down the line some one got sold a bill of goods. This tree had cables running all over the place. I've done a few cable jobs here and there, and while not a expert, I have a good understanding of what's involved. These weren't installed right from the get go, most un-needed, but worse of all they haven't been maintenance in years if not decades. The tree is scheduled to be trimmed soon(dead wood mostly) The cableing isn't being addressed, thank God. It would be a nightmare.
But if it was going to be repaired how hard would it be, and has anyone did some thing like this before?
There is so much tension on these cable, cutting them would kill you I think. I doubt trimming will relieve any tension, and most are so heavy a come a long wouldn't move them I think. The ones that were never needed in the first place, are now maybe needed because they have been being supported for so long.
Most of the eye bolts have two or more cables coming off them. Many are not in line with the cables and are pulling in awkward angles.
Though no one has asked for my opinion, or is it any of my business,(When has that stopped me.Ha)I worry the day one of these snap in the wind the whole tree may self destruct.
Is there a protocol for dealing and repairing something like this?

We have the same problem, some of the stuff I see is not needed and was installed just to make revenue. But I have been told to "re cable it" using one of those ratchet binders, pulling the tension off. Having the new set already drilled and ready to quickly install. Sounds way to freakin dangerous to me, think ya could get cut in half real quick, so I don't mess with them. I love it when they cable over a bunch of rot? Seen one that had co doms, one was so rotten that you could park a car in it, COVERED in huge conks, all up the trunk. It would have been a easy one to remove for sure, but some jack wagon cabled it instead! The butt let go, shot to the ground and the top swung around into another tree. I just was a fly on the wall when another service got the removal for the whole thing, they are pros and handled it. He said he was nervous as hell, cable was hung up pretty good in the other tree and it was close enough to primary's that they could not get a crane in to lift it off. Had no choice but to cut it the cable, when he did, it just fell out of the other tree and landed flat on ground! He was puckered up pretty good and then a big sigh of relief!

oh dear that sure sounds like many a cable job I did in hmm 1984 under instruction I wired up several big limbs on Planes right in my own City (over tight with a small tree winch as was the method then) wire eye & bolts. The company well meaning but knew not enough & now long gone bet has never ever been back to check monitor and adjust... I must pass by one day see how them trees have compensated for my poor skills and knowledge at the time. forgive me I knew not what i did.

These days i care not for cables unless in real real just need. I saw one the other day considered it could,a been saved with 2 bolts and upper cable line but,,, nup soxed it into fire wood n mulch replant site next year.
