My stove was installed September 29th of this year. I was looking through the manual and it states that the top oval plate is held on by two screws for shipping purposes. Once installed the two screws should be removed. This makes it accessable for the cleaning of the chimney. The installers did not remove the screws. My question is this.. what keeps it sealed? I see in the parts breakdown that it has a gasket under it and I estimate the oval plates weight to be around ten lbs. based on the thickness stated in the parts breakdown. Is the weight adequate to seal this? Seem odd that you latch the side door and the front doors but the top plate sits loosley on top. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

TreeCo, how do you like your stove? I'm really happy with mine. It sure looks like it would be easy to clean if all you had to do was lift that top oval plate off. I have been burning red elm so far and one thing I have noticed is that I really have to work to get it to 500. I have excellent draft and my wood is dry. By the time it gets there the room is pretty darn warm. I don't feel the need to get it any hotter. I read about people running around 600. I don't think I could get mine that hot. Mine gets to 450 pretty easy. I have a rutland magnetic thermometer on the corner. How hot have you had yours? Thanks for replying.

Hey guys, I wanted to add that I have a jutul too. I remember the installer saying 600 is to hot. As for the top plate, mine is secured but by what, I do not know. I'll look into it. The worst part about this stove is the lack of a blower unit for the backside( we just put a fan by it). Otherwise we are very happy

I looked at mine on my lunch break and it looks like it is secured by two hex head 5/16" bolts. Looks easy to get at. I thought about removing them this week and cleaning my chimney, it will be around 60 here, and putting them back in with never sieze if I can't find out for sure if I am supposed to leave them out. I like to run mine around 450. I love the way it burns clean. Classy looking stove also.
