Hi,

Thanks for the past replies stating that this is not a bolt on.

I was given two 038 supers that are in good shape besides the scored pistons/cyls. It seems parts for the 038 magnums are easier to come by and will give more power along with the magnum muffler. I have a good running 038 magnum but don't want to strip it just to figure out the differences.

Anyway I have access to machine shop tools and was wondering if anyone has done this switch, what is involved, and the end product? Is it just that the studs do not line up or are there more issues such as gasket surfaces and/or piston clearance? If it takes too much work I'll stick with the 50mm piston

Also how do the aftermarket kits compare with NOS stihl? Are pistons the same weight, do clearances check out, etc?

Thanks in advance and have a happy 4th!!!:givebeer:

Pretty sure the holes had to be elongated or something to that effect, if you search hard enough you should find a post by somebody saying that there was a template released by stihl dealers detailing how to do it?
I just remember reading it a month or so ago.

Have never done a stock mag onto a super case have done a modded and from what I remember you have to bring the holes for the cylinder bolts in towards the center of the cylinder kind of like an X. Then check to see the it fits in the case without hitting everywhere. Dirko and bolt down then check squish. Only other things that I can think of that you may have to do is open the case up just a tad with a pencil grinder or die grinder so the piston doesn't hit. The muffler should bolt right up may stick out a little further but thats about it. I would find out why the saws fried in the first place before I run it much more that a few minutes first though or you'll be right back where you started. About aftermarket piston and cylinders I have seen some ugly casting jobs and some that are right up there with your stock product. I wouldn't hesitate to use bailey's cylinders or AIP pistons and rings. Those are just a couple off the top of my head.:givebeer:
