Is it possible for a Stihl 460 and 028WB to use the same chain?

What could I do to the 028 to accomplish this?

What would be the consequences?

Thanks.

My 028 has 3/8 chain. All you need is the 3/8 bar and the 3/8 sprocket. Mine came that way new.

Good, same files, and depth gauges, life will be alittle easier.

Um, so if what I have is smaller, .325?, and cuts good, will the 3/8 cut slower?

Or is the difference negligable.

THanks.

028 can run 3/8 pitch gear just fine. IMHO it performs better with the .325 chain, but if your goal is to have both your saws run the same pitch(and I would suggest same brand/type of chain) to simplify your maintenance life, go for it. The same chain for both saws means you won't have to change any angles/techniques between sharpening each saw. I know many that do just that. I have saws that run .325, 3/8, .404 and even a couple with 1/2(which means I'm SOL and they just sit) so I run what works for each saw because I have to carry a little of everything anyway.:greenchainsaw:

028 3/8's chain

I have 2 028's with 3/8's chain and 20" bars. I havn't had any problems. 4yrs. and counting. I run 3/8's on all my saws for the same reason. The only saws that don't 3/8's .050 are my climbing saws and my 009's they all run 14" bars wiyh the same chain. Tony:jester:

So far so good, now what's the possibility of getting the WildThing in on this gig.

Then the only saw needing the little file will be the Homey.

And with the special price on the Amicks chain, I can set three saws up in one order for half what Stihl costs around here. Then I just have to get more files, so far I have only used Stihl brand round, any suggestions on something better, I am all ears.

Thanks guys.

I gotta be honest, I like Stihl's stuff. I like their chains, their bars and even their files. They may cost a bit more, but after I pay for shipping and all that, I can buy from my local guy. That's what I do.

While out this AM, I stopped at a small engine/saw shop, the guy set me up with Carlton for the XL2,WT, 028. When I inquired about running the same chains in some saws, he talked me out of changing the .325 LoPro on the WT, and for the 028 he said it had 3/8 .063 gauge so leave that alone as well.

The price for these chains was comparable to the special oregon chain price.

So I asked him what the difference was between the Stihl and Carlton chain, his opinion was that it was negligable. But if I do a search there is probably a nice debate about the merits of each brand, running the best should keep this more enjoyable.

You should check bar gauge as well on the 460...that .063 will likely be snug in a .050 bar even if they're both 3/8 pitch.

That's a good idea, thanks, went out and checked the bars, the 460 has a 3/8 .050 gauge, 24"ES, 20"oregon power match plus, and the 028WB has 6.78? stamped on it, I am unable to discern any other markings on it. The saw shop guy said it was .325 .063gauge, so I'm relying on him for that info.

One thing different bwtween them, the 028 H,L screws have 1-1/4 turn arrows on the cover, the 460 has 3/4 turn arrows, does that mean no limiters on the 028?

Thanks again.
