Just got a saw from my friend at the local repair shop - smoked cylinder and piston - all there except the air filter cover and cylinder cover.

I don't think the serial number is going to provide the info you're seeking. Look for a "family" number which are the first group of four numbers that are stamped or molded into most of the parts. Also, posting a few close up pics on here would likely result in your answer as well.

well now ... that's interesting
I checked it twice as I was writing it down ... and I was wearing my chain filing glasses, not my just lookin at stuff glasses.
I will get a pic of this thing tomorrow and post it.
I appreciate the help.
So let's see ... is it more likely that Stihl messed up their serial numbers? ... or that I f*cked up?
:dumb:

Probably you. Generally it will tell you what type of saw it is even if it was unregistered for warranty.

well I'm really curious now ... I wouldn't bet my arm that I got it right, but I'd bet you a six of Heineken
There are some early saws that will pop up with that message too. Your serial number is actually pretty low, definitely in the 90's. The earliest serial number I've been able to look up was 1994 and that surprised me. I usually don't get them to work much further than the mid 90's. So, it's a draw... you probably have it right and Stihl probably doesn't go that far back.
