I have an 028 WB that doesn't want to stay at the same idle, the idle when warmed up will stay fine but at first it just wants to change by itself (engine is slow then speeds up as engine warms). Like it wants to lean out, I can adjust the carb and make it right after it warms up and then it will go to top end with no problems (does this sound like a carb needing rebuilt?) or is this a bigger issue? its a Tillotson HU40B with the # 306 below that. I have searched on here to find if anyone else has had issues with this one but seems everyone is talking the HD not the HU. I'm trying to find a rebuild kit for it, I can find the diaphragm kits, are these all you really need or should you also change out the fuel inlet needle at the same time? by the way fuel filter and air filter are new. I will also change the fuel line hose at the same time its like goo. :dizzy:
 
OK, after doing somemore searching I have found carb kits for the HU (wow what a wide group of them). I found this one but I am not 100% sure it is the one that I need. They say for the HU series, but from other posts on here the diaphragms have to line up just right and sounds like its easy to just buy a kit and it not be the exact one that you need, I guess a call to them may tell me if it is or not. Anyway anyone that is knowledgable in this area, does this appear to be the right one? 38-4183 - Tillotson RK-14HU Carb Kit for a HU40B Tillotson. I will have to see if I can get the fuel needle also and the lever adjustment gauge, I'm working on getting a 028 repair manual right now so that will help alot. Now to find a fuel hose and an impulse hose, Hopefully I can get them at Bailey's, will have to give Gregg a call monday.

In addition to the afore mentioned items,your may want to consider a pressure/vaccum test on the crankcase.It could remotely be a leaky crankshaft seal,base gasket,etc.
 
I put her on a diet today, figured she could lose a pound or two, wish I had taken the pic before I started scraping crap off, by the way the cylinder or what I could see inside looks good.

I figured better safe than sorry. I was spraying simple green like it was going out of style, and using steam to blast it off with, then just a whipe down with a damp cloth.

all finished, never mind the chain and bar. They go away as soon as the new ones I have ordered arrived. Gregg is sending me a windsor bar and a non safety chain (dont know exactly the terms you guys call it) as well as a rim sprocket and drum for it. And believe it or not there are no extra parts left over and it fired right up. :D

I'm hoping its not, if it is its beyond what I can do for it. I would have to send it out for that. I have a vac pump and gauges (I do refrigeration work) I was worried that there could be a chance that was the problem but I don't know 2 cycles well enough to diagnose that (well until I put a vac on it) now. LOL but that will have to wait till next weekend. I have the manual on the 036 I'm guessing that the test on vac would be the same on all saws, vac of .5 bars to start and doesn't rise more than .3 bars for 20 seconds. then the seals are good.

fuel line is going to be replaced as well as the impulse line when I can get a chance to talk to gregg, fuel and air filter are new. What is the best way to test the intake boot? take it off and look for holes and make sure the clamp is on to the right measurement? and that the gasket is in good shape? sorry for all the questions like I said I'm trying to get a manual on the 028 right now but someone else is wanting it pretty bad also if the bid goes any higher its theres and I will have to wait for another to come along.
 
Yeah, just look at it while you flex it around. Just had a saw get a tear in the intake boot. it would do the high low idle thing as you moved it around and the boot would flex. You couldn't see the tear until you flexed the boot to the side a bit, then this big taer opened up.
 
028 pressure/vacuum test

I just looked up on my micro's for the 028.Pressure test.5 bar[7.25 psi] for 20 seconds.Vacuum .5 bar,rises to no more than .4 bar in 20 seconds.If it is leaking on pressure,try a little soap suds around the suspected area[just like a refridgeration line];) If on vacuum,a little wd-40,or a tiny shot of starting fluid or propane,while at an idle.The leaks,I have encountered ,were so obvious,I that I didn't have to look too far .Good luck.:)
