I've owned my 2002 chevy 6500 bucket truck for a few years now, and thinking about installing a power adder. I wanted to know if anyone knows how to figure out which hp/torque rating the stock motor is. There are a bunch of different configurations but I can't find what the difference is or how to figure out which one I have.

This is not meant to be a CAT vs. Cummins post. The motor has been very good to me but lacks power in the hills with a load of chips and a 12" chipper. I am looking to get a bigger chipper and I'm afraid it won't pull the hills or will stall/ wear clutch on steep hill takeoff.

If you call cat withe the serial number on the engine they should be able to tell you. Or try the dealer with the vin on the truck

Good call- I thought maybe there was a code somewhere listed on the engine that I could find what it was on my own- but there isn't. I called the CAT dealer and there is a serial # on the valve cover- My year starts with CKM and then a 5 digit number. Turns out my motor is 190HP 520 lb/ft--- the second lowest rating available. I have the dealer checking on power options to upgrade.

Thanks.

Does it fall on it's face when you shift into higher gears? I'm wondering what gears it has in the rear, and Allot of the 3116 engines had 5 speeds with 2 speed rear ends which basically gave you a 10 speed and that can cover up a gutless engine cause your rpm's don't fall as much between shifts... how fast will it run? My 3116 will only run about 60 wide open and i have to split the gears on minor inclines... mine is a 220hp rated 3116 not a 3126 though.

It's governed at 65 and can keep that up on the highway with no chipper. Add the chipper and you can hit the bottom of the hill at 65 and by the time you get to the top you have downshifted and doing 45.

Funny, you are in fairly flat country complaining about hills. Try pulling your chipper here in Western NC or even worse, anywhere in the Rockies. You will be happy to get back to pulling in St Louis.
On the other hand, there is no such thing as being 'overpowered' when pulling a load. Good luck on the upgrade.

I've had the pleasure of riding a motorcycle around Candler, and Ashville. Those NC highway engineers build roads up mountains a goat would go around.

You're right, we're not in the mountains, but the ground here is not nearly as flat as some other places...Illinois, kansas, OK- South of St. Louis there are some back roads with really steep inclines, and what really kills me is that there's usually a stop sign at the bottom. I don't know, maybe I'm being picky. FYI the Fabick CAT dealer still hasn't called me back about those upgrades. Anyone know about the Bully Dog System?

An option, but I would call a truck dealer that services Cat. Most of these upgrades are nothing more than a reprogram, if the warranty has expired.
