I found a sweet deal on a chipper and a bucket truck about 8 hours drive from here . My problem is i dont have a cdl license. Im thinking of trying to drive it home anyway . I hear you generally just cruise right through the weigh stations . Obviously im looking for someone to drive that does have a cdl . What happens if you get caught driving an over cdl truck without the proper license  ?

Fines and driving without a license which will probably result in your drivers license being revoked. Its like not having a license at all and driving a car. Plus you need a medical card for that vehicle which is another fine on top of the others.

The minimum fine for driving a CDL truck w/o the proper license is $5000 mandatory in Hawaii. You may be very surprised how strict and severe the penalty can be. Better to hire a driver and make sure his medical card is not expired. No current medical card is like no license. The license is valid ONLY with a current medical card. Would be a good time to go and get yourself a CDL. You will need to find a licensed CDL driver to accompany you to take the road test anyway, so may as well find someone now. It is not that difficult to get a CDL, unless you cannot pass the drug test and physical. I have had a CDL since the law was first implemented in April 1991.

Well fines aside, one of the things that happens is that your trip stops right there.

Picture this:

You are 500 miles from home, where you know nobody. You've pulled into a weigh station and they asked for your license. You don't have it, so they start writing paperwork. You aren't going anywhere until you can locate and hire a driver who can come out to the weigh station and show the proper llicense. Then you complete your trip.

How long is it going to take you to find a willing driver? How much is that drive going to cost you? To put it another way, how much negotiatiing power are you going to have in that situation? :(

This is even better if it's a roadside stop nowhere near a town!

I'm only an hour and a half out of Detroit, but I'm on the wrong side of the border. If a Canuck does it, it's called interstating, another big fine.....................

Buy it on this side of the border and you could use a Canuck.

Thought about having it hauled by a heavy equipment guy? If you can catch someone with a float that needs a backhaul, it might even be cheaper.

While cruiseing thru the weight station you could hear the words spoken over a loudspeaker= Driver pull around back and bring your paperwork inside. Thats when your world comes tumbleing down.

Psst, Casey, give ya five hundred cash for the boom off that truck. Just kidding.

After one stop at a weigh station, the DOT officer tells me to pull off the scales and park on the side. I then see another DOT guy walking to my truck with a creeper and a flashlight. Good thing my truck was only 2 years old at the time. No leaks, everything nice and tight. He did check my license, registration, insurance card and daily vehicle inspection log. Everything was OK, he said, "Drive safe and have a good day."
