hi there,i need to reduce the height of a western red cedar hedge for a client.it is currently about 10 feet and they want to take about 3 feet off of it.Is this a recommended practise?when i worked for penninsula tree service the rule of thumb was not to take more than 50% of the foliage or there would be plant shock.the hedge is healthy and we have had alot of moisture this summer.Does anyone have any ideas?I'm sure there are guide lines for this.I dont want to kill the hedge or have die back.

Stay in the green (green foilage) and perhaps a drop crotch pruning technique

I was thinking that would be the best but to get inside and see what cuts to make is almost impossible.the hedge is 10 to 12 feet high and 4 feet wide. some of the trunks are 4-5 inch diameter.in order to lower it i will be taking main trunk with foliage branches.
