I am studying for the test and am intimidated a good deal
I have been in the biz a very long time and should probably already have
been certified. What really gets me is scientific names I'm not Greek
do they expect pronunciations spelling to be accurate . Have studied
a good deal since acquiring the material but not sure am ready to
test, passed physiology and anatomy on the cd's am now into
integrated management of ornamental shrubs and trees and was
hoping to test soon but do i need to memorize all this or will a good
understanding be enough to pass? Also how long would a part time
student study to pass the exam help would be appreciated

You need to know the scientific and common names. It will be multiple choice and some pictures also some chapters will include live samples.. A little intimidating tell me about it I test on the 3-3 and just received the list.

Isa test

Hey I took the last week there was 10 tree ID both common and Latin names I think I got 7 of them right .They were pictures like four pictures of one tree . I test in a whole is hard . I thought the study guide questions were worded in more common terms than the test . I was not excepting it to be as hard as it was . I dont think I passed . This is one of the questions on the test , remember that all test are different so this probably won t be on yours .If a customer ask you to top a tree what would you do ?A. do a crown reduction B.remove the tree and replant new tree C.refuse the work D .all the above . Hey everybody chime in on this one and i will tell you mine .

Pretty hard to do all the above--you sure of the wording on that? osb no shame in having to retake a domain or two--I did.

re names, yeah it's hard to memorize them but it's really good to know the scientific names of the common ones. "Pin oak" can refer to 3 very different trees here in NC, which would be managed in very different ways.

wording

The question was worded just a little different but maybe something like( Which would be the best option if customer ask you to top a tree for them ?) I think is more like what it was . Maybe D. any of the above, instead of all of the above

ISA Certified Arborist or ISA Certified Climber or ISA Certified Line Clearance???????

I'd say ISA Certified Arborist.

Are you saying the tree ID is multiple choice! Struth, that's a joke.

arborist

Already certified insane:dizzy: climbing over twenty years if don't

been up trees for that long; studying well! I am going to pass that test
and have read enough to understand why the Latin names can make
difference in id and diagnosis but its greek to me hard to get with a
different language! Seems to me could have been translated to English
or tongue native to country your in easy enough! I guess because
I'm having dificulty is why I say that. I will get it but pronounce I don't
see that too soon; spell either but I will pass and am just starting
on getting the certs. I want municipal, utility which could grandfather
if went from experience!!!!! For the most of the study come easy but
I don't like to fail so will be well prepared! Hey ekk:bowdown:

ropensaddle we need to know the scientific names because we need to ID the trees we work on to know what we need to do with them. Common (English) name is not reliable ID--too much confusion.

I'm not sure what you what you mean about the Muni and Util tests but once you pass the Cert those are much easier.

Eric as far as your dis of multiple choice tests, please come up with a better way before you sling mud. There is nothing easy about making test questions, I am here to tell you that!:dizzy: :angry2:

We had to ID 60 from leaf samples, maybe a flower or a fruit in a room and write down both common and scientific ... maybe get your facts before shooting from the yanky hip mate!

Botanical names for plants can be intimidating. Just remember Latin is a root language for English so some of it can be familiar!

To take some of the sting out of it I recommend one of several books - 'Plant Names Simplified' - 'Gardener's Latin', I'm sure there are others. They are essentially Latin - English dictionaries specific to plants. I'm sure there is something like this somewhere on the internet too in this day and age!

When you look up the meaning of the botanical name suddenly the lighbulb can go on. Very often the Latin is descriptive of a colour, shape, texture or smell and that can be the trigger for you to remember the name.

Just looking at those strange, foriegn names and trying to memorize them with no 'memory trick' or understanding to hang them on is very difficult.

Virginia exam

Does anyone know the format of the Virginia Exam? i am going to take it in May and would love a foot up!

Study the ISA study guide, read and understand both the ANSI Z133.1 and tha A300 Pruning Standards, Know the tree and shrub species in your the area where you will be writting the exam. Listen to the instructions that the proctor will give you, and have the confidence in yourself that YOU deserve the right to be called a ISA Certified Arborist.

Hey selling my study material .

As I told you guys early I passed the exam and thought I might try to give someone A deal on the study material so it is on ebay .

I took the exam in August and passed. I was the last one to leave took me about three hous. I mostly studied from the study guide and it seemed to work. However, since that time, I've read Alex Shigo's a new tree biology and know this is a good guide for the exam.
Be careful reading the questions. The exam tends to bold and underline certain words. This should raise a flag for you. One time the answer was in the question, but it was worded in such a way that it was obvious.
Know your tree biology in and out. This will help you in your deductive reasoning.
