i just got done taking my b.m.p. class and now i have to go through a tree felling class to get my certi. loggers license here in wv. i was just curious what all does some other states make you do to be a "certified logger"? here we have to have the best managment practices class, tree felling safety class and first aid/cpr class to register for our license.

no license needed here in pa. but too get a job you need to be certified in logging cpr/first aid tree falling all that good stuff me as a owner that would be the only contract cutters i would hire are sfi certified.

in tn we have a class called the master loggers class that entails everything in one card. bmp ,falling ,cpr are all coverd in the class and when you are done you get a master loggers card that renews every 2 years with an 8 hr class. i have several mills that will not buy logs from you unless you are a master logger or atleast have one on site. i dont care if my guys are master loggers but they do have to have cpr cards. its just to easy to get that training to help save a life, for men to not have it. i also require them to take the advanced triage or first responder along with it. i have a fellow logger that had a man die on his site becouse the men were not trianed in first response and the man went into shock and bleed to death becouse proper actions were not taken. i dont want to be that owner that had a man die becouse his coworkers could not help him with simple first response training. and yes i do pay the cost of the class when it is completed and they can show me the card certification.

Oregon has something. I think both they and our fair state have an accredation program. I don't think it is required, but they get points for taking so many hours of classes. I was in a road designing class with a delimber operator. He was lost for most of the class, but said his boss told him to go so he was there.

The Association of Oregon Loggers and the Washington Contract Loggers Association have the programs.

Logger's?
What's that? Oh yeah, that's what we used to call ourselves. Now I think they call us "Forest Restoration Technition's".

They just lately started a certification program here. It's a 4 day safety training & certification course. Has to be renewed every year with a 1 day refresher course. It's not required.......yet, but every employee that is certified, the boss get's a discount on workmans comp.
They had one last month, but I opted not spend the money on registration, hotel, travel, and meals since all the sawmill's are shut down. We'll see what happens in the future.

maine has two levels. Certified Logging Professional (CLP) and Master Logger.
CLP is basically 'i can cut trees, not break any laws, and not kill myself.'
Master logger is more long term sustainability. you have to have your CLP first and they inspect more of your jobs, current and past.

there are also requirements that your machines be safe. even old skidders have to have windshields of some sort, parking brake has to work, you have to ground all moving parts (blade, boom, etc) before getting out of the cab.

thats the readers digest condensed version.
