Now that I am in the Chain Builders Hall of Fame, let me take a moment of your woodticking around and display a few of my tools I use for making a respectable race chain.

Ehp, I want to know where the hammers, chisels, drifts or punched and the old anvil are. Isn't that what your suppost to use to knock them thar chains apart and put um together. Just joking. Lewis.

Gypo are you going with me to NB to that race or what, pack up yours saws and lets ride , and ride and ride somemore, from your place to the show should be about 15 to 16 hours

Hi Fred, when I bought the stone he asked me if medium was fine, so I just said, "you tell me", so I ended up with the metric medium which is fine. Now my cutter's working corners look more like fish hooks as opposed to barbedwire.
Anyway, my cutters are so stoned now that I am forced to take down the rivets with a bench grinder, but I have to grind the bench first.

Hatchet Jack,

It looks like you are thinning your teeth from the outside which narrows your kerf and of course makes the tooth able to be made sharper, but do you do anything in the chip channel? Am I out of line asking for details of your technique?

I assume that you are a competitive chain builder based on your posts and recent illustrations of your setup. I`d like to know more for curiosity`s sake, I`ve never built a chain myself and probably won`t, but I am interested in the theories and what works.

Thanks, Russ

Hatchet Jack,
It looks like your SG is missing a guard. Remember, safety first!

The tooth is being thinned on the inside. Take a better look at the first picture. The tooth is lying on its back. Channel work yes.
The grinder never had a guard. Fred

Hatchet Jack,

Thanks for answering my questions and as soon as you pointed it out, it was painfully clear that you are indeed grinding the inside of the tooth.

All this chian stuff is so complex it's just a phone call away to get a good chain ready to go. It seems to me there is way to much time involved for me to bother with all that grinding and filing. Seems like I have a life after all. Thank God.

I would rather be working making money that spending half a life filing away. No offense jack but seems like you and John have alot of time on your hands. I would rather call Tom Fales or Dennis Cahoon and order one in short order.

Marky Mark;

Its the satisfaction of knowing why. Your stock in trade is computers so it probably wouldn't make dollars sense for you to spend literally hundreds of hours experimenting with making racing chain. It can be fun tho.
