How do you tell the difference in gauges on Oregon chain? Is there a specific number to look for on the drive link? How bad would it be to run .058 gauge on a .050 gauge bar?

You can't run 0.058 in a 0.050 bar unless it is severely worn. If you look at the drive links on 3/8" Oregon chain, 72 is 0.050", 73 is 0.058", 75 is 0.063".

i have seen .50 run in .58 but it was usually a mistake. had an dealers son put one on for me once . it actually cut well enuff to fool me for an hr or so .

www.oregonchain.com why not look it up and ask them to send you a Maintenance and Safety Manual? Not that many here read the instructions that comes with anything, it is a reference tool. Or print one out and keep it handy.

Just curious, other than being just slightly looser fit how did you realize it?

Before I got a tool to "tighten up" my bars I would buy a 50 guage bar and increase my chain size as the bar wore 50 58 63. This worked fine for me.
