Hello
I am researching chain saw accidents where the user's protective trousers have failed to stop an injury. Do you know where or how I can collate this type of information. I need information on, type of saw, the make, class and type of trouser, the situation in which the accident occurred. To your knowledge has this research been done already?
I thank you in advance.

Hi Jason, you may want to contact the Workers Compensation Board of British Columbia. Let us know what you find out.

Howdy,

At one point, several years ago, I was involved with some of this "safety" investigation, both in N.A. and in Sweden. Let me assure you that I know of no safety clothes that will stop a properly sharpened and set chisel chain! Slow it down, mabe, jam the saw eventually, mabe; but guarantee no cut through, no way.

My personal preference is the Swede style stuffed pants in winter, and the N. American kevelar sew-in-the-jeans pads in summer. (Personally, I do not like chaps, because they snag on brush, and when grabbed by the chain, tend to wrap around the leg to the unprotected side). Of course the jeans will tend to wrap a bit also, but seemingly less. Again, nothing is going to absolutely protect, other than using your head in advance.

Hi There, Walt has givin some good advice about fallers pants.
Wether pants or chaps are chosen, they should be 2-3 inches below the boot or 2-3 inches above the pants.
When ya gotta go, fallers pants are better cause all you have to do is drop the suspenders but chaps require more intricate work to remove. The nice thing about chaps is that they keep you warm and dry, pants when wet are heavy and require suspenders. Loggers stand out wearing dirty, smelly, ratted out fallers pants, so it is better to opt for the chaps, as you will be more socialy acceptable.
I have seen fallers pants that were cut through by two different operators, one tripped into the saw and the other was holding it to close while tree spacing. The first injury was to the kneecap while the other was the upper leg, however in the second injury the cutter was using just rain gear pants with the chain stop material sewn in.
