I have an older Craftsman 42cc 18" chainsaw with no model number sticker. I need to replace the Sprocket Clutch Drum. It is 2.5 " dia. Can anyone help determine the saw model number?
Does anyone know where I can find a Sears/Lowes Craftsman Chainsaw Model number cross reference? I have a Lowes purchased Craftsman, which gives a Lowes Model Number of CMXGSAMY421S , but Sears insists there is a Sears model number on it someplace in their format of XXX.XXXXXXXX. I cannot find a sears number anywhere on the damn thing.
If you look on the bottom of the saw under the clutch there should be an Oiler adjustment, the brake band may be rubbing too. I've got the same saw and run the chain a little looser than I do on my other saws and that helped with the bogging but having a big catalytic muffler does not help with power.
I guess the word "bogging" was not quite right actually. The engine performs great no matter what but the chain gets stuck frequently while the engine keeps screaming along strong is more like what is happening. I am having a difficult time trying to get the oiler adjustment to that sweet spot. My first thought was that I found it odd that the clutch was located on top of the sprocket cover instead of under it where it would seem to me that it would be better protected from oil & sawdust build up. I have a STIHL MS290 and have never found oil all over the clutch & sprocket assembly like I have with this one! All that slippery gunk just seems to gravitate onto and into the clutch plate and springs and all over the brake band. Seems like I am constantly having to remove the cover and clean it and degrease the entire assembly.
I also was googling the Model number you gave me & from what I seem to find, this Craftsman model is apparently and MTD Machine now & no longer a Poulan.
These are mtd saws with a full metal crankcase, there are a lot of other saws that that you can get parts for and swap on to this one with no modifications. They are clones of zenoah/redmax g5000.
You may also have weak clutch springs causing it to slip too.
