Can anyone settle a conversation that I was have in work yesterday. I was talking about the slight differences in safety standards between the UK and US. I said that in the UK they are required to wear chainsaw protective boots in arb, when using a chainsaw. whereas in the US it seems that only the logging industry is held to this standard. But then aren't we as arborist also governed by the OSHA standards that govern logging. I don't know. Below are the extracts that I found on the subject. Can anyone shed some light on the subject.
Now I am thinking back on the conversation and a few more subjects came up chaps and climbing. But that is another thread

OSHA 1910.266(d)(1)(v)
"The employer shall assure that each employee wears foot protection, such as heavy-duty logging boots that are waterproof or water repellent, cover and provide support to the ankle. The employer shall assure that each employee who operates a chain saw wears foot protection that is constructed with cut-resistant material which will protect the employee against contact with a running chain saw. Sharp, calk-soled boots or other slip-resistant type boots may be worn where the employer demonstrates that they are necessary for the employee's job, the terrain, the timber type, and the weather conditions, provided that foot protection otherwise required by this paragraph is met."

ANSI Z133.1
3.4.7 Clothing and footwear appropriate to the known job hazards shall be approved by the employer and worn by the employee

I am not suggesting that we climb in caulks or that we are loggers, but working on the ground we are still run the saws. I don't know it was just a conversation that came up at work. I guess the phase "where reasonably practical" applies here.

From the standpoint of pure safety, I can not imagine climbing in caulks or lunky steel-toed stiffs.

we ain't got a choice i climb in c type trousers and class1 boots+ helmet visor n ear def's

we aint loggers but a chainsaw still cuts us, it only takes one slip.

i find my haixs are just fine to climb in a bit heavy for walking miles but i dont generally walk miles in them

I use my Treemee class 2 boots wether i'm using a chainsaw or not. There poor flexabilty is a bit of pain when climbing but i'd rather have saw protective boots than not.
