has anyone used a chainsaw winch to pull themselves up in the tree? i've never done it but it might not be the safest way, but it be the easiest. it sounds pretty doable

Learn to footlock or granny lock

Silly kids, you could tie off to a truck too and have it pull you up the tree, but theres a reason you dont see anyone doing either.

I think alot would depend on the winch involved, I have a harbegger cable winch (45kg beast) and a capstan winch.

The capstan winch would probably suit the task best as it just runs rope. BUT it does require the chain drive to still be lubed, so any ropes we do use with it tend to get a little oil on them. NOT something you want to happen with your climbing rope.

I would think you would be better using a GRCS and a gas powered drill to run you up.

No easy rides in tree climbing

I'll second that. The GRCS is a great help on belay when climbing back up a spar or the like. Takes some weight off yo.

I was on a saw winch on The Tree House Project with Gerry Beranek, it pretty much did the same thin, made the 200ft foot lock easier on the body. We called it an elevator rope, SRT up one and a belay/assist rope on-pulley with the saw winch.

That few seconds of footage of the saw winch on that DVD made me want one SOOOOOO bad. It was a great way for baileys to get a few hundred dollars from giving out a dvd costing a few dollars. Thanks for that!

Watch what you say, you will have The Dan all over you.

Don't say nothing. What about those guys who go from tree to tree swinging on a grappling hook? They got way more problems than me. SEE?

Hey, how did you make out with them spurs and gear you needed for that job you were talking about?

Dan, you must spend more time fiddling around with all those gadgets than actually getting any work done. Solution to all that= just get a bucket truck. Never thought I'd say that but its true. Climbing is awesome and truely an art, (when done properly) however when you start pulling yourself up with a truck...???

Never noticed any oil on ropes after using my Simpson CSW...though I suppose it could have splattered at bit. It works fine for pulling guys into trees, but the GRCS/Milwaukee Super Hawg right angle drill combo is the ticket---we just did that for the first time last week....schweet! (better than a gas drill, the word is)

But the same rigging that's required for either tool is what can be used for human powered assist into the tree. In fact, two beefy groundies can yard a climber up mighty fast!

Setting a lifeline in a retrievable false crotch (in a pulley of course) is a great way to access tree canopies anyhow....It eliminates the need to isolate the climb line in a crotch, but does require you to choose a bombproof set point, as the forces applied to the rigging point will be over 4 times the climber's body weight.

Hre's a couple shots from the Tree House Project, the first shows Mike Oxman yarding a climber up into the canopy with the 044 powered Simpson. I' don't recall who that is that is taking in slack.
