For U.S. Forest Service areas, for IFPL levels II and III, they say power saws may be used at "Loading Sites".

Question: When they say "loading sites", does this mean only a "landing" area (which is usually a large round cleared area with no vegetation).

Or does this also include areas on the side of logging roads where logs have been stacked? (Not a "landing" per se.)

Wording from IFPL levels...

Level II...
The following may operate only between the hours of 8 PM and 1 PM local time:
-Power saws (except at loading sites)
-Etc...

Level III...
The following are prohibited, except as indicated:
-Power Saws - exception: power saws may be used at loading sites and on tractor/skidder operations between the hours of 8 PM and 1 PM local time.
-Etc...

FYI - All IFPL levels...

I interpret it that you may operate on roads and landings. Both are cleared areas, and that is the intent, to have cleared areas. Decks are just small landings as far as I'm concerned.

i agree with slowp but also its up to the ranger to decide wither the saws are running in a safe environment. so don't make them mad and you can get away with a lot as long as you got your shovel and fire extinguisher or water.

Interesting.

In NZ here, we have rules governing what we must have on the skid for fire protection.

For a logging crew we must have 200 litres of water, 2 backpack type hand pumps, 1 shovel per 2 people, a large extinguisher for every machine, a huge extinguisher for the smoko hut, 1 small personal type one for every person off the landing (ie: fellers/breaker-outers) that iis using a chainsaw. Every person in the bush must go through fire training.

Thats the rules if you want to be in the bush in NZ.
