I just received a new pair of full-wrap chaps from a very reputable company. They are a 6-ply chap and their vidoe of a Husky Saw cutting into them and being stopped from cutting through convinced me!
However, regarding the chap design, they leave the groin area feeling exposed (yikes). The split down the center and no material underneath the "jewels" have me concerned. I'm sure that 95% or higher of chain injuries occur elsewhere, but I'd like to have the protection.
I thought that pants might be a solution, but they are not the 6-ply material I'm interested in.
Do all chaps have the split down the center-front and leave you feeling exposed?
I'm even considering asking the company for patches of the great 6-ply material and doing my own tailoring.

Thanks for any replys,
Bill

I have all Husky chaps and the crotch area is open. I prefer the half-wrap because there cooler and less binding. If your that worried about it, when your cutting make sure your legs are crossed and everything is "tucked" out back. But seriously, sew a patch onto the crotch of a pair of pants or wear a cup.

I had a local tailor make me a codpiece out of kevlar and synthetic leopard fur. I like it so much that I started wearing it all the time. Between the warm fuzzy feeling and the increased safety where it counts, I barely even take the thing off to shower.

Funny...I was just thinking about the same thing yesterday while putting my chaps on. I have old chaps that I don't use and have often condsidered making the ultimate pair out of them just for the worst situations that I get into where I feel more protection is needed.

I have a group of old ladies that I know about that make pants for Anabaptist men. They call them broad falls and they are very durable denim. So I've even thought about giving them all the tools I like to carry and make up a couple of pair of custom ground pounders with the protective material interwoven in all the right places and custom pockets to secure the tools.

Mainly I'd want them for the thick stuff I commonly get into during storms or backwoods R.O.W.s that shred my chaps all the time. Sometimes I'll wear chaps just to protect my clothing in those situations.

I think, for now, we are stuck doing our own tailoring, or farming it out to dear old women that know how to sew. :)
