Hi!

I've seen often in movies or television (I've never been in United States of America) that chimney is on the side of the house. Why?

At finland the chimney is usually in the center of the house. For example, in my house there are two chimneys, both inside. As I warm up fireplaces or central heating boiler chimney will also get warmer and provides extra heat. And it's also easier to light up fire when the chimney is warm (better draft).

less work

The chimneys you see are on the outside do to the fact that most houses were not designed for wood heat and its easier to install on the out side
Your right in the fact that they should be on the inside .

I agree, today they are simply features in a room, so you can put them anywhere. They are also actually framed with no masonry and insulated stainless pipe. Now my house built in 1907 has the chimney dead center in the middle of the house. 3 flues. One for a fireplace, one originally for a coal furnace and the third????? I found an old cast iron incinerator in the basement and I assume that's what it was for. Burning household trash. Today, fireplace, gas furnace/hot water heater, wood furnace. My wife says one of here favorite things about running the furnace is a heating effect from the chimney. Our bedroom is on the second floor and her closet is built around the chimney. In the morning when she gets clothes out for the day they are already warm when she puts them on. 38' chimney from the basement to the roof.

OK! I live also in a old building, which was only heated with wood. 3+6 flues alltogether, but one in both chimneys are only for gravity-based air changing. I use fireplaces only when it gets below -10 celsius. I heat up boiler almost every day and sauna about three times in a week. Our bed is near chimney, so it's warm place during winter. I have another sauna at backyard so I can heat it up during summer. House stays cooler.
