Not a whole lot to it. I mainly took these to compare them with what yours look like.

This is what I am using to file. My next job is deadwooding a few willows and a brush pile. I just touched up the blades and reset the anvil clearance for now.

This is a fresh ground set

THE DAN, in your last pic by the lock, is that the touch up stone you are using on the knives??

thanks for the thread, I need to do this, I have new knives on, but want to keep touching em up so they dont get
to dinged up and dull, to where I cant use the touch up stone.

I use one of those draw type knife sharpeners. The ones that have the two carbide inserts in a plastic handle Serrill and Baileys sels them as well as many other outdoor sport stores. They have work very well for me and have brought down my send out sharpening cost.

Blade sharpening isn't that expensive, especially if you get a few sets and send them out to be done a few at a time. The place that does ours does them on a surface grinder, It's very acurate and sharp. They grind the exact same amount off each side, and match the blades up in pairs to be identical in weight, and size ie. the distance from bolt centre to blade edge is exactly the same on both sides of each matching pair of blades. This means they are working the same amount.

I've seen the damaged caused by blades letting loose, and the damage caused by failed drum bearings etc. It's impressive, and easily capable of killing someone. Blade changes are something we are always pretty strict on.... matched pairs, scarping the surfaces, using a torque wrnech and anti sieze. I'm big on cost cutting, but I try to save my money in other areas.
