Okay in desperation to get hold of a reasonably priced chipper downunder, I was wondering if it was possible to convert a PTO chipper into a self powered one. This chipper I am looking at is a Salsco model 826.
Cheapest 6 inch chipper on the market down here starts new at about 26 grand NZ, second hand chippers are rare.

Oh chipper gods, what say you?

TimberMac, I Considered that course myself-but I live where used self-contained units are reasonably priced. It should not be too difficult. PTO systems are designed for PTO shaft revolutions of 540 RPM. Therefore you will need to either pull the chipper side of things apart and dispose of some gearing or use a couple of pulleys between the engine and the input side of the chipper so that the engine can turn at 2200 or 3000 rpm( whereever it is designed to perform best torque wise without excessive strain and wear) and the input to your chipper will be the designed 540rpm. Best wishes.:)

Of course you could buy the PTO chipper and a tractor and put them both on a trailer.;)

Thanks stumper, I guess as I would probably be putting in a V belt tension type of clutch/drive I guess what part should be possible, well hopefully! Second hand chippers are so rare its probably easier to buy one in the states and ship it back downunder. I thought of a great option from Aussie but it turns out Tasmanian devils dont eat through rocks and trees like you see in the movies, what a rip off!
