I was just rear ended with my Brush bandit 90 behind. Any one ever had this happen and what could I expect to see in the way of damage. I was not hit to hard as the air bags in the dodge truck did not go off [30k/ 20mph]. The accident still bent the gate on my chipper and folded my bumper down on my F350 when the chipper was forced into it. I was concerned about week weld spots giving out as the chipper is not designed [like cars] to absorb impact.

Any thoughts appreciated

just have it repaired by the bandit dealer and the Ford dealer. that way they set everything back to spec. You do have insurance on both?

yep insurance

small world, The guy who hit turned out to be my battalion chiefs son! They are good people and have offered to pay for what it takes. I want to help him out [his new dodge is smushed in after all]. He happened to look down at the radio when I stopped for a bus... That f350 of mine is almost a beater anyways so I do not mind prying the bumper back. My chipper seems fine other then a bent gate which I don't mind living with if I have to. What I do not want is a broken weld or some such development.

Look for cracks in the paint in stressed areas or better yet have
it inspected by the dealer should not cost an arm and a leg for
a mear inspection!

just currious why your bumper is bent? were you towing with a small ball on the bumper itself? or did you have a seperate hitch assembly mounted on the under carriage? Ive seen the ball mounted on the bumper... I believe are to be used for light duty towing only.

accident

Mitch that is a tough one at least you know it will be taken care of.I would look at the frame of the chipper and were the coupling is on the hitch to see if it was bent.If it is have it inspected. Gotta send you some pics of an apparment fire we just had pretty wild got into the pipe chase got 3 floors going we saved it tough fire.

towed on bumper

Yes, the truck I had it on was towing off the bumper and thus the folded down bumper. The chipper is just under 4g lbs which I [although I cant recall why] thought was good to go. I'll double check as I have been dragging it around at times with a few different pickups that do not have undercarriage mounts.

Mitchell,

I'll be at the ISA (Ontario) conference this week. Call my cell phone (905 260 9134) if you need to discuss this accident.

Scott.

Thanks Scott, I am pretty sure damage is superficial, im going to use it tomorrow and hopefully confirm that.

Yea my chief is a good guy no probs if I find damage, I was mainly wondering where to look as some one here no doubt has had there chipper rear ended before. It would be great to see some pics of the fire. We have had a few of late; room and contents type stuff. On average our response is under a couple minutes so its not to often we get to see the old red dragon taking things apart.

bumper hitch

Just for information services; my trucks F150 & F350 both can take 5000 lbs tow wieght on the bumper.

Steve-Maine

Towing that much weight you should have a hitch off the frame. Most bumpers have a gross weight stamped on them as to what you can haul. You don't want to get stopped up here in Maine by the DOT with carry too much weight on bumper hitch or it will cost you.
