I have a couple questions about chipper trucks. I am looking for a used truck. I want one with a ton of storage. Right now my one truck doesn't have much storage and it's a big pain. Here is my main question. How much of a difference is it between Gas and Diesel. I have a diesel truck so I know they get better mpg. What is the difference between a Top kick with a 366 and say a Ford 700-800 with a 5.9 Cummins. I know the repair cost on the gas are a lot cheaper then the diesel. Also what will the power on the 366 be like with a full load and a 6k pound chipper. The truck I'm looking at has a Auto in it also. Please give me an info on the subject. This would be my first truck

Get the Ford, it will out pull and out last the Chevy gas + you will get WAY better gas mileage.

an auto 366? I can hear it dying of thirst already(aka pig). The manuals are extremely poor on gas and going up hill with ease. An auto 366 will be even worse. Too little power for that big of a truck with a load and towing. Go with the diesel. Which year are you looking at?

the 5.9 cummins will last years and years over a 366. there totalll junk, good engines in general. but powerless when you have a load on and a chipper behind you, you'll be lucky to hit 40mph on flat ground, and hills, dont even bother, if you buy a auto, you'll literally be bancing down some hills. cause you wont have the power to go up them

as i understand it diesel engines are built much more robust than petrol/gas engines. It's just that the sound of them will slowly drive you mad...

The truck would be a mid 90's model. I want something pretty nice and not beat to hell. I know that is going to be hard to find. Most o my work is a 30-40 mile drive one way. I don't do a lot of work but I am doing more all the time. Thanks for the information.

Would you be willing to look at a cabover? Some of my friends have them with the dump bodies and tool boxes mounted behind the cab. They do far better on fuel mileage than the bigger trucks. They are good trucks, but they aren't topkicks or F700's either. One of my other friends has an F700 with a detroit? engine... maybe cummins. The thing drinks fuel like there's no tomorrow and doesn't go very fast loaded or unloaded.

My truck does just fine pulling a 7,000 lb chipper and chips. Sometimes the hills get me a little bogged down but it pulls fine. I have a topkick with a 366 gas in it. Sure, i would like to have a diesel, but what I paid for this truck I couldnt pass it up. Just look at what is going to be best in the long run.

We bought a 1992 International DT466 used with 125,000 miles in 1998. The box is 16' long, it tows a Vermeer 1250 every day with no problem. This truck has had almost no problems other than routine maintenance. It now has around 220,000 miles.

I love my 2001 international with a DT466 and allison auto., cold A/C and cruise control. I don't ever want another dang 366 standard,no air. gas hog again. My first chipper truck was a 1978 chev. C60 with a 350 and a 4 and a two trans. It was black with chrome simulators and I thought it was a chick magnet.

Diesel lasts but a gas engine can pull depends on the rears ratios
I used to think It was engines in my hot rod days but the truth
is the rear end is what makes it skit it! I still like diesels for work
trucks because they last and oil changes are further apart I don't
want to work on a work truck so I go diesel.

Get the diesel! My 366 TopKick gets 4 mpg, my 92 Ford with 6.6 Brazilian diesel (if that's what it is) get 8 mpg...and has way more torque and pulling power. I tow a 250 Bandit

both mine have 18 yard L Boxes with tons of storage.

I would have gotten a diesel, but for what i paid for this truck I couldnt pass it up. I bought it for 3500, its a 93 model and had 59,000 miles when I bought it. I bought another one just like it, its a 91 model and gave 2500 for it.

That is exactly what I am looking for. I don't do enough work to justify a expensive truck. I bet the truck won;t see but 6-8k miles. I just want something better then a 1-ton.

Those trucks show up all the time on Ebay, and many go cheap. A bunch of them are ex Asplundh trucks. For the price, I think they would make a good starter truck.
