Position Duties
Act as lead worker and assist in planning the work for crews. Perform tree maintenance activities such as pruning or removing arterial, residential, and greenbelt trees with the use of hydraulic aerial equipment, or by climbing, using ropes, saddles or ladders. Adhere to safety procedures including the use of hard hats and safety glasses and the inspection of cutting and climbing equipment. Perform general maintenance around street trees. Record condition of trees and make recommendations for future actions. Work in a multi-cultural work place and customer base with an emphasis on communication for cooperation, collaboration, inclusiveness, anti-racism and pluralism.
Required Qualifications
Two years experience in gardening, urban forestry, landscape construction or maintenance, tree farming, tree pruning, which involves the use of safety harnesses, climbing equipment, aerial hydraulic lift trucks, rigging, and chain saws and includes the application of arboricultural practices, proper pruning methods, and related safety practices.
Required to stand, walk, climb trees, or bend for extended periods. Frequently required to lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds. May require handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances. Ability to work a flexible shift, and be on-call at all times in case of emergencies. Required to work outdoors in all types of weather. Required to work at varying heights and within legal/safe distances to electrical hazards and with the possible dangers of falling. Required to operate machinery and equipment with extreme caution, including hydraulic aerial lift trucks, wood chippers, stump cutters, winches, chainsaws, and handsaws.
Familiarity with State and Federal regulations regarding tree trimming. Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 90 days of employment and pass a drug test as part of the City’s CDL random drug test pool. Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR card, and Flagging/Traffic Control card within 90 days of employment. Pass a working test. WA State driver’s license. Submit a complete driver’s abstract on request. Pass a pre-employment physical. A background check may be required.
Desired Qualifications
ACRT Line clearance certification or experience working adjacent to electrical conductors. ISA Certified Arborist or Certified Tree Worker. Experience working along high volume transportation corridors or similar sites where pedestrian and traffic control measures are required for work operations. Knowledge and practical experience in work site hazard/traffic safety setup. Good communication skills.
