Aww, I was born 10 years later, but have heard about this storm from many people throughout my life. Guess people made t-shirts that said "I survived the winter of 78/79". Kinda hope to see something like that in my lifetime.
I lived in southern Ohio in 78. My mother was truck dispatcher at a local stone quarry. The county took/borrowed two 988 Cat payloaders to clear roads. Saw some pics the other day of a one lane path cleared with snow near 20 ft on the sides. Where ever the road was cut thru a hill it just filled those spots up level.
I still lived up in that area, and remember the big snow storms well. Wasn't it fun operating that open cab machine?? "The good old days", before enclosed cabs with heat and a/c.

My dad was clearing some fence rows for a farmer near there. The county called him to clear roads. we was able to drive to Elmore but he had to ride double with the farmer on snowmobile to the tractor, he said that was a trip!. There was an area near the canoe rental place along the Sandusky river where the snow was to the top of the cab. That blade sliced huge chunks of snow off and he could push them right up and over the fences.
He also had plastic on all three sides of the cab. We have the air intake pipes back near the cab to reduce dust in the filters when raking burn piles this worked good because it kept the snow from drawing in and plugging the air filter, this happened to allot of other machines guys had and they stalled the engines.
That would sure be a bit of a ride from Elmore to Napoleon Rd. When the county borrowed the 988's they put fuel with some water in and froze them up. Sounds like you folks covered some territory plowing snow with the old girl.
Ya. lol I the smart military sent a whole train load of dozer and loaders up from Florida and when they got here they wouldnt start, they had water in the cooling system, no anti-freeze solution, cracked all the engine blocks!! lol
I was a little tyke in South Jersey, remember the storm fondly. I was 4 years old and sledding down the snow hills my dad made with his 350 Case crawler loader. We had the only clean street in town. He eventually went about a mile and a half down the road and cleared out the entrance for the local fire dept. South Jersey has had some good snows but hasn't seen anything like '78 since '78.
That Cat looks to be well kept. It's really nice to see someone hold on to a good piece for so long. The throw away/keeping up with the jones'es society makes me puke. Good luck with it in the years to come.
