I have been looking at my 346's for a while and thinking how great it would be if I had one that was a top handle for big dismantles. I have an old 020av that is a back handle which works really well on the ground. So it got me thinking how hard it would be to design a way to have a handle system that could convert between being top to back handle quick and easily.

So this is what I came up with (really rough I know), the blue dots are hinges, the orange is a locking mechanism which latches into the back of the saw body when the handle is in rear handle configuration, and into the handlebar when its set up for top handle use. The throttle cable and kill switch wiring would run through the handle backwards towards the hinges and into the saw body.

What do you think?

I realise if based on the ms200 it would mean a repositioning of the carb and airfilter amongst other bits. I did model it on the ms200T because its the industry standard and powerful enough to be used as a back handle saw. And its square so quick and easy to draw!

The Back handled 020 I have is awesome for limbing or general use, but its not so great up a tree for climbers that like top handles. By making a saw that can fill both rolls, and that can be changed in seconds, it would also make using the saw safer as youd set it up depending on what you want it to be.

The idea of doing it with a 346xp might be a bit much, but it would bring the huskys into competition with the ms200 with a dependable and proven power unit. By no means a pruning saw, but a Bad MF bombing saw as well as a great limbing saw.

Crazy? Sure. Im an insomniac tree surgeon, I got lots of time for crazy!

I've got no use for the idea. I like to keep my climbing equipment separate from my ground equipment, that way my saw can stay sharp and in better shape longer.

wouldn't work, timber....all climb saws have a horizontally mounted cylinder. There's no way that a vertical cyl saw could be made to work with a top handle saw. It would be impossibly unweildy.

As well, did you ever use first gen climb saws like the 9.7 lb 020S? Imagine a saw just one pound heavier. It would be no fun throwing it around, especially after we've all gotten used to 7-8 pound top handle saws.....

Just mod the muffler on your 338, and could outcut a 200T....which, to me, is plenaty fast for chunking out small wood.

Also, if there's not a whole lot of cuts to be made in a tree, but they are large, as in dismantling a shade tree, or when branches can just be dropped, I'll climb with my modded 346.
