Has anyone ever found material resembling clinkers or hard cinders in their woodstove or OWB? Last year I burned primarily elm in my stove. Some of it was red elm that had laid for a couple years in a kind of damp spot in the woods. Is it possible that the wood absorbed some amount of minerals that then recombined to form these rough looking crusty formations in the bottom of my stove? The logs had no bark that would have held mud or anything like that. Just curious if anyone has seen this also.

I see that if I don't burn hot enough or if you get a wet stick. I don't think it has anything to do with minerals, it's just damping down the fire too much as far as I know.

I've had some "clinkers" before. I've never found an exact cause but it seem to coinside with rotten and or dirty wood. Otherwise I don't know.

I get them in my wood stove when I burn Elm. Which is pretty often.

Now that you say that, I seem to find them when burning elm more than other wood as well.

I thought those were SINKERS... as opposed to floaters...

I see the clinker after I burn presto logs. I use these to get the long overnight burns maybe 6-7 hrs. Mixed with wood they burn a long time and very hot. They only appear when I use the sawdust logs.... My theory temps. or dirt in the logs???

My clinkers come after I burn mostly oak overnight with minimal air entering the stove [I don't use a damper]. Thing is, this has happened only this winter. Never had it before, though the conditions haven't changed.
