Closed porting

Can anyone explain the advantages/disadvantages of closed loop porting? This is something I do not have much understanding about, and probably should have. What makes me wonder is, that some saws that compete with closed ported saws seem to do pretty darn good in spite of what seems to be viewed as an inferior design.
