i just put a clutch off a 034 on my 036. due to the fact that the center spider on the orig.036 clutch got cracked.(dont ask me how) any way to make a short story long, the 034 clutch looks the same and fits perfect but when i run it for the first time the shoes dont want to retract all the way and the clutch drags by hand and applying the chain brake at an idle will stall it. the clutches arevisually identical. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Odds are the springs are shot or broke. also some thing in the clutch itself is keeping the shoes from retracting all the way, such as burrs or nicks, maybe the shoe guides for the shoes are worn. Saws as a rule don't have many clutch problems, springs are usually the culprits.

I had a similar problem on an 041, turns out I put a washer in the wrong place. The shoes were dragging on the side. Centrifugal force would let the clutches out but spring tension could not pull them back.

Yes, Scott is right- the shoe retainers are different on an 034 clutch than on an 036 clutch and the washers different, this would create the additional drag. Use the washer that's OEM for an 034 and you won't have this problem.

clutch

It is very possible there was not a washer on the 034. They started out with retainer that had wings to keep a broken spring from wiping out the oil pump. If the washer is in there, it has set the ctuch too high and is binding the shoes.

i may be trading the saw and its just like new so im gonna bite the bullet and buy the clutch that belongs on it. orig. is best i guess. but first im gonna switch the washer and see where that gets me. just for kicks. THANKS TO ALL YOU FINE GENTS FOR YOURE HELP i might be getting the 066 ive always wanted. the 036 is a great saw but i want a magnum bad.
