I can't get the clutch off on my 039!!! Is it left hand thread? Any tips? I can't get the part with the shoes off.

It spins off in a clockwise direction. you'll need to use some starter cord in the spark plug hole to keep the piston from moving, while you use a wrench with a bit of leverage on the cluch.

Aha! Ok, I'll give it a shot. I think I wrecked my flywheel (don't know if the key was cast in, or a removeable one, but I've got another flywheel), but it's alright. Since my local STIHL dealer sold me an almost complete 039 (missing a side and carb covers, clutch, oiler, and top handle), for $25, I wonder what they'd sell me an 044 or 046 for parts, for? :D

How much rope?

When putting rope in a cylinder to use as a piston stop, how much rope is supposed to be shoved in the hole? Also what is the best position for the piston to be in before I start putting the rope in? I've never had occasion to do it, but thought it would be nice to know if it ever becomes necessary.:yoyo:

I generally use about 5" of rope. make sure the piston is up past the transfer and exhaust ports so the rope doesnt get stuck in one of those ports, or you'll have a really fun task of pulling the cyl off to get it out.

What lawn M said.

I use a 3/8" nylon rope . It washes up nicely if you drop it, and 3/8" gives you a good amount of resistance to hanging in the port.

There are several diffent types of piston stops for stihl saws. The 039 requires the use of a flat plastic type, NOT the screw in type. if you're unsure, or don't have the right type, use the rope.

If your 039 has a decomp valve (late model), either remove it or make sure it's in the "up" (closed) positon before inserting rope and removing the flywheel or clutch. If you don't, you have a good chance of bending it.

It has a cast slot... to get it off (039/29), you unscrew the nuts a few turns, then hold the saw by the flywheel and gently by firmly "tap" the nut with a small hammer; the flywheel will release. Don't try this on the 024/26/36/44/66 etc... they require a puller.
