Coal in a wood insert?

have access to some coal anb want to know if its smart to throw a couple chunks in now and then or a bad idea also what size pieces some of the stuff could be almost powdery
 
depending upon where you live... this could be a really BAD idea or a good idea. coal burns dirtier than wood.

for me it'd be a really bad idea. I've got neighbors close by so exhaust coming out of my chimney needs to be almost invisible. besides startup you almost never see smoke coming out of my chimney.
