Not sure where to post this but here goes. Last weekend I took down an Elm tree (I think). When cutting it up in 16's, I saw the beautiful "reddish flames". The owner who does lathe woodwork as an hobby was thrilled and decided to keep the wood. My question is: if I come across beautiful colorful patterns, is there money to be made here? If so, how do I go about it?

Wish I took pics of the wood. Never seen one as pretty before.

My guess is the wood was Boxelder if it had red flame pattern. I don't think there is all that much money in a tree here or there but what I have is a guy who will make me a bowl for getting him some of this such wood, so your best bet is something like that. Selling the wood might be more trouble than it is worth.

+1 to the Boxelder. I've done quite a few recently that have been topped, or lions-tailed real bad in the past. Fell on houses or what-not.

I have a rough time giving that stuff away. lol But, by all means, you find a niche for it, do share!!

God Bless,

Jeff

A customer/friend of mine recently gave me a ball tip pen he made out of boxelder. Looks pretty nice with the 'red flaming' wood as previously described. He also makes bowls and such. He does it more as a hobby but I suppose there could be some money in it for the woodworker but not so much the wood supplier. Around here, boxelder is easy to come by - plentiful in shelterbelts and even residential yards. You can make a lot of pens and bowls out of a single boxelder.

This is not the pen my friend made for me but a similar one downloaded from the internet...

True that! lol

So, where abouts in SD you at? I used to live between Sioux Falls, and Yankton. Small little town on 46.

I'm in Aberdeen. I operated my tree svc out of Brookings, then Pierre before coming to Aberdeen 5 years ago. Been moving around a bit with my primary job (govt) but should be staying here for awhile.

Ahhh. I liked it up that way, was pretty. Did a little bit of hunting up there too, good birds, better than here anyway.

Hope everything works out for you. Good luck!

Can't beat the hunting weather right now - 80s today and tomorrow and 70s all next week. Should be a great pheasant opener!

I'm so spoiled. I hunt at my wife's family farm near hoven/gettysburg (between aberdeen and pierre). 15 minutes and I've got my limit of birds.

I think I'll use a slingshot this year just to keep it sporting...
