I know there are builders that have large, tuned mufflers/pipes for their hotsaws, etc. Has anyone ever attemped to build a muffler that fits within the stock profile? I have been playing around with designing one, kinda of following the design type used for the muffler that I have on my truck. By design, it is supposed to muffle out the high frequencies and enhance the low frequencies. I'd say it does pretty fair, so I copied my design as best I could. Anyway, any comments on the pic? It's a section view from the bar side of the saw. The plate opening for the exit is tunable. In other words, one could have 5 different plates with different openings, if one had the time to play around with tuning that much.

I edited and added three more pics. Hopefully they will help.

What about the backpressure?

For sound of that V8 rumble an 088 with an open stock muffler does well, you can tune it for that sound even more, but its not in proper tuning.

All my saws have stock open mufflers, but your idea does seem like it could work too and make the whine a more appealing rumble.

How about a SuperTrap muffler type design. Or more similar to a cherry bomb (glass pack) style?

That would sound funny to hear in the woods!

Heh, my sentra sounds like its got a glass pack on it right now, bone stock. I'd like to hear that on a chainsaw though.

muffler

Looks like the new style mufflers that Hooker and some other performance exhaust companies are making. Will it work? Lets try one on Frankenstien and see what happens. :p

Too many bends, twists and turns in that design. Good looking but won't be the best regarding performance (IMO). Flow is very sensitive to those bends and twists and turns. As stated, it would be interesting to see what one sounds like and how it would perform.

Country - those Autocad versions? Maybe Solidworks?

John (njforestfire), Solidworks is my friend! I really enjoy using it, it makes some things very easy to create and visualize. I'll play with this some more and see about reducing the number of flow restrictions. I have a Ravin muffler on my truck, which is what I used as a guideline for this. They have a pic on their website, goravin.com. I can make one or two for pretty much nothing, so I have nothing to lose but time to do it. It will be 18 gauge SS sheetmetal. I'm opting for heavier sheet to help eliminate the ringing sound sometimes found in thinner made mufflers.

Thanks for the input all!

Country, that is great. A good thought for sure. I just can't help but think you are not separating the two stroke and four stroke designs. Your design looks like a four stroke. This is not conducive to two stroke power. If you go to the Eric Gore site and study the pipe designs it may give a better understanding of the differences. I want to encourage you to continue to try to get that pipe type power without the bulk but that blaffle filled type won't do it, in my opinion. Keep trying and don't let failures get you down. Edison tried hundreds of filaments before he got the light bulb going. You can find a new design, that no one has thought of, with persistence. Remember they call it two stroke theory because it isn't perfected yet! Mike

How about a twisting inside design? Like a cork screw or something to help propel flow through the muffler? Similar to a turbine. high flow, more power.
uh oh,m off subject now, but does anyone have a turbocharged chainsaw yet? Not a monster saw but a stock saw modified with a mini-turbo?

I looked for Eric Gore's website, and found one, but searched and couldn't find anything on pipe design. I'll keep looking for other websites, thanks.

It looks like it should work pretty good but, like lumberjack was saying, "What about back pressure." Anyway I have a few saws myself and they run better with the screens out of them.
