Here is my dilemma: In my little town of Robbinsville, NC, there is a Davey Tree crew that seems to have some semblance of safety but they also do things that make no sense to me at all. Here are a couple things that I would like some feedback on:
1. Sending up new guys in the tree with minimal training, which would include a basic understanding of how rope works, how not to use rope, breaking strength, etc, how a tree is structured and where to tie into, how to use a harness.....basic stuff that is important. I've heard some guys will spike up with no lanyard for thirty feet, just bear hugging.
2.This one is crazy....all the climbers wear only hard hats....not climbing helmets, hard hats. Enough said, that is stupid and defeats the purpose.
3. They seem to wear out their equipment to the point where it is not safe anymore. Ropes are way past the point of retirement, things like that.
I am no expert in line clearance but they spike every tree, which production wise, makes sense, but is not very kosher. Is that normal for line clearing?
Is it normal for bigger companies to not comply with ansi standards just for the sake of production?
I could be just really ignorant but I thought Davey was huge on safety.
I will say, though, everything else they do seems to be safe, chainsaw handling, wearing the proper safety equipment, etc. But the climbing part of their division seems to be stuck in the seventies.
