Ive seen black ozzing sores around the bases of many maple trees for years. Recently, I ran across it and wanted to know exactly what it was. So I asked heres what I found out.
It seems maples are a hardy treat for many organisms.
Wetwood, which is a problem internal trunk decay and secondary fungal and/or bacterial oragnisms that live off the sugars and decaying wood. Through their metabolism theey give off gases and gases rupture through the outher bark. Through the fissures sap and " slime flux" oozes that can stain the trunk black due to sooty mold growth. Trees can live many years with wetwood disease, but will decline ober time as the internal trunk decay enlarges.
